Birds are everywhere

I don't HATE birds, per se. I just think they're stupid. And creepy.

One time, there was a bad hail storm at my college campus. My roommate brought in a mourning dove that had been hit.
Its mate was little more than a splatter of feathers next to it. The surviving bird had a broken neck or something. It kept twitching, trying to turn its head straight, but it couldn't. My roommate was convinced she could take care of him, by putting him on our little balcony. The heeeeeealing powers of the balcony, I suppose? She smuggled it into our no-pets dorm room by stuffing it up her shirt. Which didn't disguise the bird at all, mind you.

So, this twitching, wounded bird was outside my window (the balcony access was through MY window), despite my protests. The next day, it was less twitchy but couldn't fly or keep its head straight. The roommate wouldn't take it to the vet. She tried to make a blindfold for it, to make it less stressed, which mostly just freaked it out to be held.

And then one afternoon after classes, it was gone.
"Where is the bird?"
"I guess it flew away," she replied in that tone that said don't press the matter further.

I later heard that a mourning dove was found on the sidewalk outside our building that same day. It was a four story drop. Yet it was still alive (I suppose it fluttered-glided on its fall down). Still twitching. I don't know what happened to it after that.
